The PostgreSQL community mourns Simon Riggs

The PostgreSQL community is dealing with the loss of Simon Riggs, who passed away on March 26:

Simon was responsible for many of the enterprise features we find in PostgreSQL today, including point in time recovery, hot standby, and synchronous replication. He was the founder of 2ndQuadrant which employed many of the PostgreSQL developers, later becoming part of EDB where he worked as a Postgres Fellow until his retirement. He was responsible for the UK PostgreSQL conferences for many years until he passed that responsibility to PostgreSQL Europe last year.

The PostgreSQL Core Team is deeply saddened by the loss of our long-time friend and colleague Simon
Riggs on the 26th of March, 2024.

Simon was responsible for many of the enterprise features we find in PostgreSQL today, including
point in time recovery, hot standby, and synchronous replication. He was the founder of 2ndQuadrant
which employed many of the PostgreSQL developers, later becoming part of EDB where he worked as a
Postgres Fellow until his retirement. He was responsible for the UK PostgreSQL conferences for many
years until he passed that responsibility to PostgreSQL Europe last year.

Simon's last community contribution was the presentation of the keynote at PostgreSQL Conference
Europe 2023 in Prague, which you can watch [on
YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W-J36IxYv4).

Simon will be sorely missed by everyone that knew him, and the PostgreSQL Project offers its
deepest sympathies to his family and friends at this time.

Wow, that is sad news. I remember his dedication to pushing PostgreSQL to the next level. We feel the benefits daily.

May he rest in peace. His work will not be forgotten.

I met Simon a few times at various conferences. What a loss; he was such a nice chap.

Me too. He was very encouraging to newcomers to the community, willing to entertain new ideas and break down barriers to contribution. What a loss.

Indeed a great loss.

Evidently, it was a solo aircraft accident: https://www.itv.com/news/anglia/2024-03-27/truly-great-fa...

Oh no. I saw the incident circulate on aviation channels. Poor Simon. Condolences to his family and friends for the loss. Very sorry.

General aviation is very very unforgiving.
